Our Member of the Month this month is Andrew (Drew) Price.

In September 2023, Drew’s life took an unexpected turn after a fall at school led to a concussion. Initially, it seemed like a standard childhood injury, but his condition quickly worsened, and he was taken to Poole Hospital for further evaluation. A CT scan was performed, and in the early hours of the morning, doctors delivered devastating news to his family — they had found a brain tumour.

Despite the shock, Drew’s first reaction was to comfort his mother, assuring her that he would be alright. Even in that moment, his courage and selflessness shone through.

A biopsy was carried out at Southampton Hospital, and the tumour was diagnosed as an optic pathway glioma. In true Drew fashion, he gave the tumour a name — Terry. Unfortunately, 'Terry' also caused hydrocephalus, a condition that led to excess fluid on Drew’s brain. He required surgery to fit a shunt to relieve the pressure.

On October 20th, 2023, Drew began chemotherapy in an effort to shrink the inoperable tumour. The treatment was long and challenging, but Drew faced each stage with remarkable bravery. On May 7th, 2025, after 18 months of chemotherapy, he finally rang the bell to mark the end of treatment — a moment his family will never forget.

After taking time off to recover from surgeries and adjust to treatment, Drew was able to return to school. There have been good days and difficult ones, but throughout it all, his determination has never wavered. Just days after a round of chemo and a much-needed blood transfusion, he even joined his classmates on the school’s residential trip — a testament to his spirit and resilience.

Terry the tumour is still there — slightly smaller now, but very much a part of Drew’s life. The future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Drew is ready for the long haul. He’s determined to beat Terry and live his life to the absolute fullest.

"This journey has made us appreciate life even more than we already did, & his strength & bravery has made me realise that we are capable of anything, if only we have the courage to try"
