Member of the Month May 2026
Our Member of the Month this month is Franki Olney.
Franki’s journey began in December 2025, when her family noticed she was not quite herself. At first, it seemed as though she was recovering from a virus, but her symptoms quickly became more concerning. She stopped speaking clearly and began sounding much younger, almost baby-like, making it difficult for others to understand her. She was frequently sick, struggled to walk, became extremely sleepy, and experienced sudden intense emotions that were completely out of character. As time went on, she also began suffering from headaches. Due to persistent vomiting and a loss of appetite, she lost a significant amount of weight.

Over the following weeks, Franki and her family were in and out of hospital repeatedly. Each visit involved blood tests, cannulas, and IV fluids, yet no clear answers were given. Doctors believed it was likely another virus, but her family knew there was something far more serious happening.
Everything changed on January 21st 2026. Franki was diagnosed with a brain tumour and, that same night, was blue-lighted to Great Ormond Street Hospital. The tumour, measuring 5x5cm, had caused a blockage of spinal fluid, creating dangerous pressure inside her head. The following day, she underwent a full day of surgery, including a craniotomy to remove the tumour. She was later diagnosed with a grade 3 ependymoma.

Following recovery from such a major operation, Franki went on to complete six weeks of proton beam radiotherapy. During the final stage of her treatment, she developed an infection linked to her PICC line, resulting in another hospital admission and a further course of IV antibiotics.
In the space of just three months, Franki endured brain surgery and intensive radiotherapy.
"The Beads of Courage show just how much she has been through in such a short time, each one representing a moment that no child should have to face."

Because of the aggressive nature of this type of tumour, the future remains uncertain, making everything Franki and her family continue to face even more difficult.
Despite it all, Franki has shown extraordinary strength and resilience. Now back at home, she continues her recovery while still facing challenges with eating and maintaining her weight. Taking each day as it comes, she continues to smile, laugh, and find moments of happiness, even during the hardest times. Through her courage and determination, Franki continues to inspire everyone around her.
