Our Member of the Month this month is Daisy Wathan.

Daisy, a typical teenager with a sassy, fiery, and spirited personality, faced an unexpected and daunting challenge in October 2023. Initially experiencing severe headaches and vomiting, it quickly became evident that something was seriously wrong. The subsequent medical tests revealed the scary news: Daisy had a brain tumour. Despite the overwhelming diagnosis, she approached the situation with remarkable bravery and resilience. She underwent brain surgery, and her amazing recovery showcased her fighting spirit. However, her journey took another devastating turn when she learned that the tumour was cancerous.

This diagnosis plunged Daisy and her family into a whirlwind of medical appointments and treatment plans. The intensity of the situation required them to spend seven weeks in London, where Daisy received pioneering proton beam therapy. This treatment offered a ray of hope amid the dark clouds of her diagnosis. Throughout this challenging period, Daisy drew immense comfort from having her parents and younger siblings by her side in London. Their presence provided her with emotional support and a sense of normalcy in an otherwise turbulent time. However, she deeply missed her extended family, friends, and older sister, who remained at home.

As Daisy transitioned to the next phase of her treatment, she began chemotherapy in March 2024. Despite the grueling nature of this treatment, Daisy faced it with her characteristic resilience and determination. Her attitude remained unwavering, and she tackled each week with the same spirit that defined her personality before her illness.

Daisy keeps the nurses on their toes with her questions and takes great comfort from her beads of courage, adding a bead for each treatment that she has undergone.”

These beads, each representing a specific treatment or milestone, have become a tangible testament to her bravery and endurance. Adding a bead for every treatment undergone, Daisy can look at her growing collection and see a visual representation of her strength and progress. These beads have become more than just tokens; they symbolise her fight, resilience, and the milestones she has achieved despite the odds.

Looking ahead, Daisy is eagerly anticipating the end of her treatment. She is determined to return to school and resume her education, particularly looking forward to starting her GCSEs. This goal keeps her motivated and focused on the future, providing a sense of purpose and normalcy amid her medical battles. Daisy’s journey, though fraught with challenges, highlights her indomitable spirit and unwavering determination.

Throughout this arduous journey, Daisy has proven herself to be an absolute warrior. Her family, friends, and medical team are in awe of her strength and courage. Daisy’s story is one of resilience, hope, and the unwavering human spirit. As she continues to fight and look forward to a future beyond her illness, her story serves as an inspiration to everyone around her. Her family remains incredibly proud of her, cherishing every moment of her remarkable journey and standing by her side every step of the way.

Daisy is looking forward to finishing her treatment and being able to go back to school to start her GCSE’s. Daisy is an absolute warrior, and we are so proud of her!
